A study commissioned in Australia by the National Association for Information Destruction (NAID), has found significant amounts of personal information left on recycled computers. For the organisations recycling their drives, this is a data breach problem. For individuals, their most private information is at risk.
The study that can be found here, matches the results of an experiment conducted a number of years ago by ShredDisk (a subsiduary of Eagle Secure Shredding) and Homeland Secure IT
The take away from both these studies, is that there is only one way to be completely sure that your personal information is secure, and that is to physically destroy the any hard drives before recycling old computer equipment.
